6th May 2018

Welcome to St John’s Church

Notices for Sunday 6th May

11am MORNING WORSHIP + THANKSGIVING: Welcome to our service this morning led by James.  Today Heiko talks to us about ‘I am the Bread of Life’ John 6:25-51. We also offer a very warm welcome to Annabell and her family, on her thanksgiving day. Please join them for refreshments after the service today.

CONTACT DETAILS-IMPORTANT: Your privacy is important to us, and we want to continue to communicate with YOU which is in line with UK law on data             protection.  UK law is changing and we now need to confirm your consent to how we contact you. Please pick up a form available in church which will allow us to do this and return to Lesley when completed.  We do need a form for everyone we have any contact details for.  Thank you for your help in this matter.

THE WEST FAMILY would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone for all your words of support, cards and gifts on the occasion of Alex’s baptism.  It was a very special, joyful day for all the family, especially Alex, and we were very moved by the outpouring of love and support from all our church family.  Thank you also to everyone who brought food to share at what was a wonderful time of fellowship and celebration after the service.  Heartfelt thanks to you all.

CRECHE/LIGHT Following a few months where staffing on LIGHT (creche) reached critical levels, our prayers have been answered in part, which is fantastic news. At one stage, we only had 2 leaders. The LIGHT leaders team has now been boosted by the welcome addition of Kerry BOYCE and Ruth RAWSON, and we are grateful for these ladies for offering their services, which should cut the leading responsibility down to 1 every 5 weeks, allowing our leaders to participate more fully in the services. We are still desperately short of helpers in LIGHT and would ask for your continued prayers for this vital area of the church. At        present, leaders are having to double as helpers, which isn’t ideal as we have no helpers. Helping in creche does not involve any planning in advance. You are a   support to the leader.  LIGHT would benefit from the addition of another 4 helpers, therefore would not be expected to be on duty for more than one a month. With the age range of the children (0-5) it is a legal requirement for there to be 2 adults in the room, so we are desperate to fill this gap in staffing. If you feel able to help, please let Julie HARTRIDGE, Charlotte FIDLER, or any of the clergy team aware. Please can we ask you to pray that the required helpers will be found amongst the members of the congregation. Many Thanks

NEWPORT FOOD BANK At the end of June Jenny Townley will step down as Coordinator of the Newport foodbank. It has been five years, in November, since the foodbank opened in Newport. During that time we have supported a number of families and individuals through difficult times. Much of this is down to the enormous generosity of the churches and Newport people donating food and money, which has enabled the project to keep going. As of the beginning of May we are going down to just one session. These sessions will remain on a Tuesday afternoon and we will continue to have a Thrive support worker attending, to answer questions on benefits, debt and housing etc.  The foodbank was set up to be a Christian witness in the town. It is a means of showing God’s service in practical way. There is a mix of Christian volunteers and volunteers who may not have any faith, working at the foodbank and over the years there have been many fruitful conversations, as a result. If you may be interested in taking on this role then please contact Matthew or Lesley who will put you in touch with Jenny. Alternatively if you would like to volunteer occasionally to cover when other volunteers are off sick or on holiday then please get in touch. .

A MEN’S BREAKFAST takes place this Saturday (12th) 8.30am at The Whitehouse Hotel in Muxton.  Please let Matthew know you are coming.

VULNERABLE ADULTS AWARENESS: As churches we are required to have in place a policy and processes to safeguard all vulnerable people in our church community. For many years we have done this for children and young people and  are now required to do so for vulnerable adults; this area is complex and many of us may be vulnerable at some time in our lives. We have the opportunity of exploring this area with our Diocese   Safeguarding Advisor Neil Spiring on Thursday 17 May 7.30  at St John’s. We would like all who are able to attend to come along; it is especially important for those supporting and leading groups. If you would like more information please contact Jan Stackhouse.

Our popular Join us 4 a Cuppa! continues on Friday 18th May with a slight   difference.  We will be meeting between 12noon-2pm…..for a ‘Royal Tea Party’ £2.50 to include a spring lunch and draw ticket. There is a lot of organisation and it really helps to have your availability to     ensure we have enough leaders/helpers even more so this year as we have a few of our regular leaders and helpers unavailable so your time, if you can give it, is more vital. Please fill in form available in church and hand to Lesley or Ellie .
