Seeking God For Our Future Direction – Building a Vision for St John’s –  Afternoon Away 8th July: You will have seen the sheets on the wall in the lounge and entrance area with what we feel God might be asking us to do in the next stages of the life of St John’s.  Please keep praying and writing on these. The Parish Development Team (PDT) are organising an afternoon away at Cosy Hall in Newport for the afternoon of Sunday 8th July from 1.30 until 5.30 pm. A group from St John’s will go to pray, look through what is on these sheets and decide what will shape our vision.  We have limited space and  some of you will have    received invitations to come to this afternoon already. There are some spaces specifically set aside for those who would like to come who have not been        specifically invited – these will be offered on a first come, first served basis.  If you have not received an invitation but would like to come please let any of the PDT members (James Tagg, Jon Rawson, Matthew Lefroy, Jo Lefroy, Simon Trotman or June Gregory) know. Please be assured that if you are not at the meeting you will not have missed your chance to shape the vision! But please do take the opportunity to contribute in advance by adding your thoughts to the sheets in the lounge/entrance area before 9th July.

AN EXCITING NEW WAY TO PRACTICALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MODERN SLAVERY : Safe Carwash App – Tackling Modern Slavery in our parishes.  Modern slavery is hidden in plain sight on our high streets. The National Crime Agency thinks there are tens of thousands of people being   exploited in the UK, forced to work long hours, for little or no pay, and under threat of violence. We all know that many people are being exploited in hand car washes, which in recent years have sprung up across the country in their thousands. Many of those hand car washes are legitimate businesses, but some of them are not. Police raids in hand car washes in towns and cities up and down the country have unearthed victims living in horrendous conditions. There is no reliable data on just how widespread it is. This lack of information means that victims could be falling through the net, becoming more enmeshed in the cycle of exploitation. Our national partners – The Clewer Initiative have spoken to the police, the National Crime Agency and the Gangmasters & Labour Abuse Authority about how the church and others can help them solve this; how we can bring these hidden victims into the light. The Clewer Initiative and the Church of   England are developing an app, which can be downloaded for free onto your smartphone nowWe are encouraging people using a hand car wash, or simply walking past one, to download the app and complete a short survey about the working conditions of the car wash. If we think you have reason to believe that exploitation is going on, we will ask you to report it to the Modern Slavery Helpline. The information will also be immediately shared with the National Crime Agency, to help them with their investigations. Find out more Find out more on the poster in church or at https://www.theclewerinitiative.org/safecarwash It is estimated that every town is affected, with people being trafficked and exploited and trafficked across our Diocese.
